Slovenia Launches One-Year Digital Nomad Visa for Non-EU Professionals

19 November, 2025

In a bid to attract remote workers, Slovenia is launching its first-ever digital nomad visa, with applications set to open from 21 November 2025, according to government and legal sources.

The visa is aimed at non-EU and non-EEA nationals - so remote workers from outside Europe who want to live in Slovenia temporarily. To qualify, applicants must work exclusively for foreign clients or employers and provide proof of a steady income. The exact minimum hasn’t been confirmed, though some reports suggest around €3,200/month net, which is about twice Slovenia’s average net salary. Applicants must also have valid health insurance, with coverage for emergencies in Slovenia, and submit a certificate of no criminal record.

Family members (spouse or dependents) can also join the visa holder, but they are not allowed to work for Slovenian businesses under this visa.

Applicants will be able to apply in one of three ways: online, via Slovenia’s e-government portal, at a Slovenian embassy or consulate in their home country, or in Slovenia, if they are already legally present.

The visa will be valid for 12 months (one year). It is non-renewable, meaning you cannot simply extend it after it expires; you must spend at least 6 months outside Slovenia before reapplying. The visa is strictly for remote work: no local employment or contracts with Slovenian-based clients are allowed.

Slovenia is pitching this visa to attract digital professionals by offering an appealing mix of nature, infrastructure, and affordability: Compared to neighbours such as Italy and Austria, Slovenia is relatively inexpensive. The capital Ljubljana and other cities (Maribor, Celje, Koper) have co-working spaces and reliable internet.

As a Schengen member, visa holders can travel freely to other Schengen countries for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period).

Slovenia’s new visa is part of a broader trend in Europe: more countries are creating dedicated remote-worker permits to boost tourism and attract international talent.

For digital nomads, this is a compelling opportunity: one year of living in a safe, scenic, and well-connected country, without needing to find a local job - just enough time to experience Slovenia’s culture, nature, and work-life balance.
