TEFL Workers’ Union Launches Second Town Hall and Issues Scam Warning
11 June, 2025
The TEFL Workers’ Union continues to strengthen its grassroots community with the successful launch of its second “TEFL Town Hall” in London. Held on May 2nd at the May Day Rooms on Fleet Street, the event brought together English language teaching professionals for an evening of conversation, collective brainstorming, and free pizza and drinks. The Town Hall is part of the union’s wider effort to build solidarity among TEFL workers facing precarious conditions across the sector.
A follow-up event took place in Bristol on the 30th of May. Events are open to both members and non-members. The “TEFL Town Hall” is an opportunity for TEFL professionals to connect, share experiences, and discuss workplace issues in an informal and welcoming setting.
In addition to community-building events, the union has issued a warning about a company called “Phoenix Tutors Club,” which has reportedly engaged in questionable employment practices. According to the union, the company uses misleading “self-employed” contracts that may bypass fair pay and protections. Teachers are urged to approach with caution and conduct thorough research before accepting any offers from the organisation.
With events and advocacy growing across the UK, the TEFL Workers’ Union remains focused on improving transparency, fairness, and support within the English language teaching industry.
