Work Remotely in Paradise: Philippines Rolls Out Nomad Visa
30 Apr, 2025
The Philippines is introducing a Digital Nomad Visa to attract remote workers and boost tourism and the economy. Backed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the initiative allows foreign professionals to live and work remotely in the country for up to a year, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants must demonstrate a stable income and come from countries with reciprocal visa arrangements for Filipinos. This move aligns the Philippines with over 50 nations offering similar visas and aims to capitalise on the global shift towards remote work.
Senator Joel Villanueva, who filed Senate Bill No. 2991 to institutionalise the visa, emphasised the Philippines' appeal to digital nomads, citing its natural beauty and growing infrastructure. The Department of Tourism supports the initiative, noting a 9.15% increase in foreign visitors in 2024, totalling 5.95 million tourists and generating PHP 760.5 billion in revenue.
Under the proposed visa, applicants must provide proof of sufficient income earned outside the Philippines, valid health insurance, and a clean criminal record. Visa holders are prohibited from taking local employment but can contribute to local communities through knowledge sharing. The visa is valid for one year and can be renewed for an additional year. The full requirement list that nomad’s must meet to qualify for the visa includes:
Be at least 18 years old
Provide proof of remote work and sufficient income from sources outside the Philippines
Have no criminal record
Possess valid health insurance for the entire stay
Be a citizen of a country that grants Digital Nomad Visas to Filipinos and where the Philippines maintains a Foreign Service Post
Not pose a threat to Philippine security
Not be employed within the Philippines
The Philippines' move to introduce a Digital Nomad Visa reflects its commitment to embracing the remote work revolution and enhancing its position as a desirable destination for global professionals.
