How to Find TEFL Volunteer Opportunities

You will find many volunteer opportunities across the world, particularly in Africa, Asia and South America, however there are bound to be plenty of opportunities in your local area. If you live in an area where there are a large number of refugees or immigrants who need to learn English to improve their chances of finding work here, then try and find out whether English lessons are being offered.  Adult education centres are a good place to start and sometimes classes will be run in your local town hall. Students are likely to get lessons for free so they will want volunteers. You may also be able to offer private lessons, explaining that you are looking to gain experience offering the lessons for free, or at a very low rate. I am sure many people will jump at the chance! If you don’t have many non-English speakers in your area, try the local university as most universities tend to enrol a number of foreign students. When looking to offer private tutoring try advertising your services in your local area. Libraries, job centres and newsagents are good places to start. The UK-TEFL exclusive Becoming a Private EFL teacher will give you further guidance of teaching privately.

If you’re looking to head further afield then you will find an abundance of organisations offering volunteer opportunities across the world. This way you can decide where you want to go and what kind of volunteering you would like to do, whether it’s working with nursery age children teaching basic English, playing games and generally taking care of them or teaching primary or secondary children more advanced English. Volunteer placements come with a price which some people find strange as it can seem like you are paying to work but you normally get accommodation and food included in the price.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to a community, whether it’s in your local area or abroad, and you will no doubt gain some invaluable experience. It can be hard to work for free but you will gain experience that will be invaluable when looking for a paid TEFL job and will most definitely make you stand out from the crowd. If you like the sound of spending some time giving back to a community and building up some TEFL experience, then  take the first step by booking on one of our TEFL courses today!
