Why did you choose UK-TEFL?
Although I have two separate degrees, and a master degree, I found that job opportunities were very limited in the UK so I decided to widen my search to overseas. The UK-TEFL certificate seemed like a great way to make this happen.
Have you used your UK-TEFL qualification?
Yes, I completed my UK-TEFL course in September 2010 which gave me the confidence to apply for jobs overseas. Initially, I was offered a position in Changde which was for two months, and gave me some solid experience. After that I was offered a one year contract in Guangzhou.
Where are you currently working?
At the moment I am working at Li Cheng country garden Kindergarten school in Zencheng, Guangzhou province. I also have a separate role of improving the Chinese teachers English to help them in their own teaching.
What is the best bit about being an EFL teacher?
I really enjoy doing something different everyday and the chance to experience different cultures is priceless!
Do you have a favourite age group to teach?
I love teaching kids because of the fun element to the lessons but teaching adults can be equally rewarding and I think TEFL made me realise I just love teaching in general!
Have you any interesting stories about your teaching experiences so far?
The best and the worst thing is the first time you stand in front of a group of 30 Chinese kids who have never seen a foreigner before because, with no curriculum to work from, it’s like the greatest laxative ever! I have learnt that the best thing to do is just remember your TEFL training. smile lots and be prepared to be silly (at the end of every lesson the kids come and stroke the hair on my arms like I’m a big white polar bear!)
Tell us your top tips for TEFL teaching:
I have definitely learnt that enthusiasm overcomes inexperience...! And never underestimate your assistant teachers, they are invaluable!
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
This experience has fundamentally changed my life - it has taught me that the world is as big or small as we make it. I expect to be in China for many years to come as the people are so great and it is like nothing you can imagine. My advice is not to let other people put you off something that will transform your life. Although it was difficult when I was unable to find work in the UK, it ultimately led to my amazing career in China and I certainly wouldn’t change that! Thanks so much to UK-TEFL for all your help!
Any other comments:
Few things really do change your life but after I completed my UK-TEFL course my life did change and I realised I could teach in China. Due to this now I have a life that I had only previously dreamed of.
