WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Case Study of the Month : Jonathan Cooper

Have you been on a UK-TEFL course? Fill in this application form, and the best one will be featured in next month's newsletter! You will receive a FREE Absolute TEFL if your story is featured in a UK-TEFL newsletter.

After completing his 3 day UK-TEFL course in May 2010, Jonathan applied for the Georgia paid teaching programme through the UK-TEFL placement service. He successfully secured a place, and has since completed his contract over there. Jonathan featured in our September 2010 newsletter shortly before he set off to Georgia, and we have caught up with him again as he prepares to embark on the next stage of his TEFL journey, with a fantastic placement in Venezuela. Read our case study to find out more about Jonathan's career so far, and why he hasn't looked back since his UK-TEFL course.

How did you find your placement in Georgia?

I really enjoyed the Georgia placement, the students were very enthusiastic and the local people were friendly and welcoming. The culture is very male dominated and outside of Tblisi, especially in the smaller villages and cities, it was very rare to see Georgian women in bars or restaurants.

What was the best bit about the Georgia placement?

The students and the host families were the best aspect of my placement.

Have you got any interesting stories from your time in Georgia to tell us about?

The language is very difficult to read and one day a friend and I got a bus to Batumi. Unfortunately, our reading skills were not that good and we ended up in Borjormi!  Luckily for us, it turned out to be just as beautiful as Batumi so we still managed to have an enjoyable day.

What do you enjoy most about being an EFL teacher?

Meeting new people all over the world and learning about new cultures is by far the best part of my job.

Where are you off to next?

I am lucky enough to be heading to Venezuela very soon.

How did you secure your job there?

I saw the job on the UK-TEFL website and applied. I then had a skype interview with the school and was offered an 8 month contract in the capital, Caracas. I will be teaching business and basic conversational English in large companies.

What made you choose Venezuela?

I like South America and have done some travelling in Brazil before I became TEFL qualified so it seemed like the perfect place to go to next.

What are your future plans?

After Venezuela I really don’t know, maybe I will stay in South America or return to Georgia or Turkey.

Any tips for new EFL teachers, or those deciding whether to take a UK-TEFL course?

Do it and enjoy it because once you get your first job you will never want to do anything else!

UK-TEFL wish Jonathan the best of luck for his new placement!
