Why did you become a TEFL trainer?
I enjoy giving teaching tips and advice on all aspects of teaching English as a foreign language. I wanted to train people to do the job I love in the hope they will enjoy it as much as I have.
Where have you taught before?
I have taught in Milan and Bari in Italy, Australia and London and Bath here in the UK.
If you could go and work anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If I went abroad again, I’d love to go to Japan as I find the culture really interesting. I also love Thailand, so that would be on my list!
What is your favourite part of being a UK-TEFL trainer?
I enjoy seeing the trainees do their teaching practice because they come up with such creative and engaging lessons in a very short time. I also love seeing their enthusiasm and confidence grow over the two days.
What is your favourite part of the course?
I enjoy the teaching practice, and I love hearing about all the trainees’ TEFL plans. I also really like the foreign language lesson as trainees get to put themselves in the position of the students and they really enjoy learning a bit of a new language!
Do you have a favourite group to work with?
All the groups I’ve trained have been great, really supportive and encouraging of each other. We have had some real characters on the course, and we have some laughs as well as learning lots.
Do you have any favourite memories of your classes with UK-TEFL?
We had a group in November who got on fantastically and really made me laugh, a couple of them had already taught a little bit of TEFL and had some stories to tell. I also remember some great lessons by trainees, with some very creative activities.
Have you got any success stories from previous students?
One trainee, Peter, has secured a post in Thailand and will be flying out shortly. A couple of recent trainees are heading out to China to begin jobs teaching children. Another trainee, Barry, enjoyed the course so much he’s planning to do extra TEFL courses and hopes to become a trainer himself one day.
What are your future plans?
I’m married now with a young son, so we’ll be staying in Bath for the time being. I currently teach adults in a small school in Bath and I also give private tuition. My husband also has a TEFL qualification and we would both like to live abroad again in the future. I spent my childhood in Norway and loved it, so I would love my son to see different countries and cultures.
Any websites you can recommend for job hunters?
Here are three websites I'd recommend looking at:
www.tefl.com
www.eslcafe.com
http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/jobs/education/tefl/
A good site for teaching ideas is www.onestopenglish.com, where teachers share lesson plans and worksheets as well as teaching tips.
And don’t forget the UK-TEFL jobs page too!
