TRAINER INTERVIEW

Naheen Madarbakus

Location of Training: London

Naheen last appeared in the UK-TEFL newsletter in October 2010. We caught up with her again to get the low-down on the past year, including memorable trainees, teaching the advanced course and studying for her Diploma!

How has the past year of training gone?

It's been quite eventful actually! I have met lots of new people who have gone away and started their TEFL careers and have kept in touch to tell me all about their jobs and adventures! I’ve heard back from people in China, Argentina and even parts of Africa and it's always a good feeling knowing that you helped them get there!

Any memorable moments?

One of my most recent sessions saw a role play taking place in one of the lesson presentations. The guys played the girls who were going shopping in a market and the whole theme over the three days became this trainee’s man bag which would feature in every presentation he did!

How are you finding teaching the Advanced Course as well?
The Advanced course generates many new ideas from the trainees themselves and that helps them understand about planning and teaching. Everyone has a different thought process and teaching style as well so it’s beneficial for the trainees to learn from each other and take away so many new ideas in just two days.

What is your favourite part of the Advanced Course?
I like teaching the business section as nobody can believe how fun it can actually be! I also like the one-to-one section as I find that this is the section where the penny finally drops that they’ve been lesson planning all along!

Have you done any more overseas teaching? Do you plan to?
I haven’t been overseas since I returned from Japan (4 years) and South Korea (2.5 years). I would love to go back to another overseas adventure though! Anywhere with a beach just to enjoy the expat camaraderie and sunshine one more time would be lovely!

What are your plans for 2012?
I finish my Trinity Diploma in TESOL this year so I would like to continue training and also move into course and material development at some point.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
I would like to be teaching abroad, living by a beach somewhere!

Thanks Naheen! Good luck with completing your Trinity Diploma and all the best for 2012!
