STUDENT INTERVIEW

Nihaya Al-Othmani

With her existing teaching experience, Nihaya decided it was time to obtain a recognised qualification and develop her teaching skills before seeking employment overseas. She initially attempted an online course, but on finding this wasn't for her, Nihaya decided a more interactive learning environment was more suited to her. She discovered UK-TEFL, and didn't hesitate enrolling onto a weekend course. Nihaya tells us all about her course:

Quick Facts:

Location: London

Course Location: London

Course Date: 10th and 11th September 2011

Trainer:  Alex Herrington

Why did you choose to do a UK-TEFL course?

I am a qualified teacher from Iraq, and therefore I have significant experience teaching in the UK and abroad. I chose to do a TEFL to gain a recognised qualification and develop my teaching skills and I found the courses to be a short yet comprehensive way to obtain this. I originally attempted to do an online TESOL course, but I found it immensely difficult as I prefer learning in a more interactive, classroom based environment.

How did you find the course?

The course was very informative, interesting, enjoyable and achievable, so I thoroughly enjoyed it and I felt like I had learnt a lot by the end.

Would you recommend the course to others?

Yes. I have already recommended it, especially because my current job is as a recruitment advisor.

What was the best part of the course?

I found preparing a teaching plan, and delivering my teaching practices to be the best aspects of the course!

Where do you plan to teach English?

I would like to travel abroad, specifically to the Far East or Middle East. Ideally, I would like to go to one of the Arab countries.

Why have you chosen this destination? When are you planning on doing this?

I hope to find work there as soon as I can, and I chose the Middle East because I am familiar with the culture and students expectations from me.

What is the most interesting/helpful thing you learnt on the course?

The different methods of icebreakers and activities were very useful and it was great to learn how to help new students to relax and interact freely with each other. I also liked the team work and the trainer’s ability to keep everyone engaged and motivated in class was really impressive.

Are you going to keep in touch with other students and trainer?

Yes, definitely!

What are your long term goals or ambitions?

In the long term, I would like to do further study, perhaps even a CELTA at some point.

Any advice for those thinking about doing a course?

I would advise anyone thinking of taking a UK-TEFL course to enrol now! I have been advising all my clients and colleagues to have a go at the course, because you never know where it might lead in the future, and it is a useful qualification to have!

Good luck with your search for employment Nihaya!
