Every city in the UK has a large number of private language schools.
This is where the majority of people will go to learn English.

The UK has two very different EFL employment possibilities, teaching in traditional private language schools and teaching more informally, often part-time or on short-term contracts.

Private language schools are run commercially and generally have their pick of available teaching staff. Although salaries are good, competition for jobs is fierce as many experienced and qualified British teachers return from teaching overseas seeking employment in the UK.

Salary Details

Expect to earn around £25,000 per year in London. Expect to earn around  £18,000 per year elsewhere.

Further Prospects

As a newly qualified teacher, your best bet in the UK is to look for more informal teaching positions. You will find good opportunities at universities and colleges, teaching foreign students English or helping with study programmes in the summer. There are also good prospects for those who want to teach English privately, often on a one to one basis. Expect to earn between £10 and £18 an hour for short term contracts or private English lessons.

Another way to get employment in the UK is to work with new immigrants and asylum seekers. Although this work is not always paid, it is a good way to get English teaching experience (which always looks good on your CV). Contact your local Council for jobs like this in your area.
