Why is there a demand for English teachers? The status of English is rapidly rising, due to it recently becoming a compulsory part of the curriculum in all Swiss schools. In Switzerland, young people are far more motivated to learn English than any other language which has brought a greater demand for foreign teachers of English.
How do I go about getting a job? Finding work before you go is the best option. TASIS, Berlitz and Haut-Lac are some of the most popular schools. It is possible for novice teachers to get a few hours’ private tuition each week or work at summer camps. The Swiss Federation of Private Schools produces a list of summer schools including ones that teach English. You will find that Swiss regulations are quite strict, therefore foreign teachers can encounter issues when opening bank accounts but for those who can overcome the challenges, the rewards of working here are well worth the hassle!
Where do EFL teachers live? Accommodation is usually supplied by your employer, although you will often end up in a small single room, rather than in your own apartment.
What is the food like?
Swiss cuisine is varied. The great speciality is fondue, a delicious blend of Gruyère and Vacherin cheese, melted and mixed with white wine, flour, Kirsch and a little garlic. Other cheese specialities are Emmental and Tête de Moine. Pork sausages or salami come in a variety of local recipes including Beinwurst and Engadinerwurst. A great variety of Swiss wines are available throughout the country. Swiss beer is also very popular - both lager and dark beers.
What will I do in the evenings, on days off or on my holidays?
There is so much to do and discover in Switzerland in your spare time, the hard part is choosing what to do!
Why not join the Swiss in their favorite pastime, hiking. The mountains are also the perfect place to get active, with ice climbing, ski touring, snowboarding, deep-snow skiing, heli-skiing and glacier walking close at hand. The Ice Palace is well worth a visit too. Enjoy a lake cruise or ferry trip on the likes of Lake Zürich, Lake Geneva or Lake Constance. You could head to the Basler Fasnacht (a pre-Lenten carnival), with its 3 days of grand masked parties and street parades with fancy costumes. Take Europe's highest aerial cablecar up the Little Matterhorn at Zermatt, then ski back to the car-free village below. Geneva's ancient city centre is great to explore, particularly the crowning glory, the Cathédrale de St Pierre.
Do I need to learn/speak the language?
The English language is very widespread and is used as a link between Switzerland's various linguistic communities. It is not essential to speak the language.
How much does it cost to travel to Switzerland from the UK?
