Many countries throughout this region offer good English teaching opportunities, particularly for the recently qualified teacher. A traditional TEFL journey is to start off in Mexico and work your way down to the higher wages of Chile and Argentina.

South America

During the current economic slowdown in the UK, it is worth considering heading to areas that are still booming. Most South American countries have an expanding English teaching industry.

Hosting the world's largest rainforest, The Amazon, you will find Brazil has some of the most beautiful surroundings and is a great location for your first EFL job.  The climate is mostly warm and the hourly rate tends to be very good.

The Chilean government employs native speakers in public school classrooms and private language schools are as easy to find as coffee shops and post offices. Business professionals are flocking to these centres of learning in large numbers to increase their understanding of English for travel, business and personal reasons.

Don't believe the bad press often associated with Colombia because of the drug trade. Not only is it a safe country to live, but travellers are coming in droves to enjoy the flora and fauna as well as explore the lost cities. The capital city of Bogota is an amazing hangout for museums, history and urban nightlife. You are sure to see other English teachers basking in their new surroundings while enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of the larger cities.
