There is a high demand for English teachers for the predominantly Spanish community as a way of improving the working life of Mexicans. As the tourism industry is always growing, it is important for everyone in this industry to have a good level of English.
How do I go about getting a job in Mexico?
There are many routes that a successful TEFL student could take to find employment in Mexico. One route is through the British Council which runs teaching centres in Mexico – for more information on this you can visit www.britishcouncil.org/mexico. This route would be appropriate for anyone with TEFL experience or alternatively a solid university education.
Another route would be to work as freelance teacher for a combination of companies or to work full time in a school-based job. The wages are higher but the hours are fewer and less predictable. Companies for this kind of work would be Harmon Hall and Interlingua.
Where do EFL teachers live?

Do I need to learn/speak Spanish?
As a teacher of English, you will not need to know any Spanish to work there. However, basic knowledge could be helpful in day-to-day life. In more popular areas, English will be widely spoken.

What is the food like?
Mexican food is unlike the type found in Mexican restaurants in the UK. For the adventurous, eat local cuisine and try something new – you will find the quality of this food very high, and the prices very reasonable.
What will I do in the evenings, on days off or on my holidays?
Most teaching will take place in early mornings and evenings. In general, weekends are your own free time and at some schools, Friday’s are free too. There is plenty to see and do in Mexico on your days off for free or at a minimal cost. A few highlights of Mexico City would be Alameda Park, full of statues of Roman and Greek influence and a great place for spending the day exploring. If you carry on walking down the road you’ll find the national museum of art, the engineering museum and the opera bar. This area is full of coffee shops and bars, and is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon in the sunshine.
