As with many countries in South America, there is a great need for Business English and so demand is high for native English speakers throughout the whole of Ecuador. Since it adopted the US Dollar, the country has enjoyed political stability and demand for English continues to thrive.
How do I go about getting a job in Ecuador?
A popular way of getting a job in Ecuador is to take your CV and visit the schools in person. They appreciate the personal level that prospective teachers go to. It is very important that the potential employer has a good idea of the level of English the teacher has.
If you are looking for voluntary work, you should try any of the number of charitable schools for disadvantaged children where you can expect to not only teach English, but also do painting, PE activities and play games with the children.
Where do EFL teachers live?
Check the internet cafes – there are lots of advertisements of ‘house-shares’ with families at a reasonable price. This will also give you the opportunity to get experience of real life in Ecuador. The cost of living is relatively low, so despite the wages seeming to be low, it is still sufficient to live on.
Do I need to learn/speak Spanish?
If you take up accommodation living with a Spanish family this is great opportunity to pick up and improve your Spanish. It is not essential that you learn or speak Spanish to get employment though.
What is the food like?
Ecuador is well known for its varied exotic fruits and outstanding seafood so if you love your fish you will enjoy the food they have to offer in Ecuador. If you are more adventurous try some roasted cuy which is better known as guinea pig!
