Why is there a demand for English teachers?
For most Costa Ricans, the ability to speak English is essential in career progression. Therefore the demand for English teachers is high.

How do I go about getting a job in Costa Rica?
The best way to get a job in a school in Costa Rica is to go into them in person with your CV. They want to see how fluent you are in English and don’t tend to take applications via email. So dress smartly and approach the schools directly.

As Business English is popular, you could advertise privately as many businessmen are interested in learning outside of normal working hours.

Where do EFL teachers live?
EFL teachers can find accommodation in local listings, if it is not provided by the school.

If your sole source of income is from tutoring businessmen then you will have to find your own accommodation by looking at local ads in newspapers.

Do I need to learn/speak Spanish?
Having knowledge of Spanish is not essential but brushing up on a few basic phrases before you go could be helpful.

What is the food like?
The main part of a Costa Rican diet consists of rice and beans accompanying some kind of meat or fish.

Try a dish called Casado which includes rice, beans, cabbage, tomato salad, fried plantains and a type of meat or fish. Quite a light dish, but sufficiently filling.

What will I do in the evenings, on days off or on my holidays?
As Costa Rica is mostly warm in climate you may want to take advantage of this by enjoying some outdoor activities such as kayaking, bike rentals or golf.

If you want a day of relaxation why not visit Tabacon hot water springs which are heated by the Arenal Volcano.

How much does not it cost to fly to Costa Rica from the UK?
Approx £600.
