Ecuador is characterised by the landscape, with the spectacular Andes and Amazon rainforests creating a diverse climate throughout the year. Ecuador also owns the Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. The islands are a national park, renowned for being home to vast arrays of endemic species, including various birds, lizards and Galapagos penguins and seals.

Ecuadorians are known to throw a good party, and you’ll find plenty of fiestas throughout the year to join in. One of the best is ‘La Fiesta de la Mama Negra’, a traditional festival which takes place twice a year in the town of Latacunga. This rival to the Brazil carnival begins in September with a celebration for ‘La Mercedes’ who is believed to have stopped the eruption of the Cotopaxi volcano in 1742. In November another festival is held, which includes a chaotic mix of Spanish and African culture, with colourful parades, costumes, fireworks, characters and vast amounts of homemade alcoholic drinks! The party culminates with the ‘Mama Negra’ riding a horse through the crowds with their face painted black, spraying the spectators with water and milk. Although not for the faint-hearted, this lively fiesta is well worth a visit.

A bit about the placement: You will spend your time teaching English to various ages in Cuenca, a city located in the Southern Andes. Your hours will be 15-20 per week, Monday to Friday, with the opportunity to do extra tutoring and conversation classes if desired.
