Lesson planning and practice
TEFL certificate of attendance (unless you have opted for the NCFE certificate)
Advice on how and where to find EFL employment
Where are the standard courses held?
The Standard Courses are held in Belfast, Blackpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Southampton. To view dates and locations, click here.
How old do I need to be to enrol on a course?
The You must be aged sixteen or over to enrol on a UK-TEFL course.
Do I need any particular qualifications for the standard course, especially in English?
You don’t need any qualifications; as long as you can speak English fluently you can go on the Standard Course – even if you don’t have any teaching experience. For the Advanced course you must have any previous TEFL qualification, including weekend TEFL certificates, CELTA, Trinity TESOL and online TEFL qualifications.
Do I need to be good at grammar?
You don’t need to be an expert as some grammar will be covered on the course. Most people haven’t studied grammar since school so you won’t be the only one. If you do want to brush up, you can enrol on our English language awareness course or alternatively, you may want to purchase the A-Z of English Grammar Book to refer back to.
How do I apply?
You can call us on 0871 222 1231 or apply online – just click here.
How much do the standard courses cost?
UK-TEFL courses are between £200 and £250 depending on the location and duration. This includes the course, refreshments and your course certificate.
How do I pay?
You can pay with all major debit/credit cards, via paypay or using a cheque or postal order. If your course is more than two weeks away you can pay a £50 deposit and, if you paid by credit/debit card, the remaining balance will automatically be deducted two weeks before the course start date .If you don't want this to happen, give us a call and we can arrange a way which suits you better. If your course is within the next two weeks you will need to pay the full amount.
If my employer is paying for the course can they be invoiced for the fees?
Yes, just call 0871 222 1231. One of our advisors will take all your details and your employer’s details. Your joining instructions will be issued and sent to you and we will send an invoice direct to your employer.
Is the balance payment automatically charged to my credit/debit card?
Yes, but if you don’t want that to happen, give us a call and we can arrange a way which suits you better.
How far in advance do I need to book the course?
You can book onto a course up until midnight the day before the course, but we highly recommend you book on at least two weeks in advance.
What is the difference between the two day course and the three day standard course?
The main difference is the 2 day course is held at weekends, and the 3 day course is held during the week. They cover the same content, but the 3 day course has shorter days. If it is possible for you to attend the 3 day course during week, we would recommend you do this, as you will gain an extra lesson practice and more one-to-one time with your trainer and, therefore, more hours of training on your certificate.
How many hours of teaching practice will there be on the course?
There are over six hours of peer to peer teaching on the course. More information on how the days will run can be found here.
Do I need to get any books for the standard course?
You don’t need to buy anything to attend the course, although we would recommend purchasing The TEFL Starter Pack if you are attending the Standard Course.
Can I get teaching practice with real EFL students?
During the course you will be able to practice teaching with other students on the course. It will involve role play so you will know what it’s like to be a teacher AND a student. This will hopefully encourage you to put it into practice for real and to find a job.
How big are the classes – how many students are there?
Our classes have around 20 students. Numbers vary depending on the time of year, so classes may be smaller.
Do I have to take an exam?
There is no exam as there is continuous assessment throughout the course.
If you opt in for the NCFE certificate, you will be formally assessed by your trainer in relation to specific criteria and you will be issued with an NCFE accredited qualification to certify that you have met the required learning objectives.
If you do not opt for the NCFE certificate, you will be assessed throughout the course and on passing, you will receive a certificate of attendance issued by UK-TEFL.
Can I fail the course?
For an attendance certificate:
You can fail but it is the trainers’ job to get you through the course. In our experience the only people who do fail are not really suited to becoming a teacher. Our fail rate is less than one percent.
For an NCFE achievement certificate:
You must achieve specific learning outcomes by the end of the course in order to pass the assessment. The assessment is designed to allow for progression on the couse, so your final teaching practice will be the one that determines whether or not you pass. In the event that you do not pass the NCFE assessment, your trainer will decide whether you have reached the level required for an attendance certificate which will still qualify you as an EFL teacher.
Further information on the NCFE assessment can be found here>
What qualification will I get?
You will be qualified to teach English as a foreign language in the UK and overseas. You have the option to be formally assessed on your course in order to receive an NCFE issued certicate of achievement. If you choose this, your trainer will assess you during the course in relation to set criteria as follows:
-
Use of target language
-
Clear presentation
-
Positive learning atmosphere
-
Flow and use of high student talk time
-
Organisation of lesson
-
Clear board work, handouts and pictures
If you opt out, you will be issued with our standard attendance certificates. Find out more on our accreditation here>
Who will I be able to teach after the standard course?
When you complete the course you will be qualified to teach adults and children. If you are looking to specialise into Teaching Business English, Teaching Young Learners, One-to-One Teaching or Advanced Learners, follow up the standard course with the Advanced Course.
When will I receive my certificate?
If you successfully complete the course your certificate (standard or NCFE) will be sent by standard delivery post within 15 working days. It will be sent to your address – if your address changes you need to tell the Administrator at UK-TEFL immediately by calling 0871 222 1231.
If you have purchased a fast track, your certificate will be send within 5-7 days of passing your course.
Can I apply for a job as soon as I pass the course?
As soon as you receive your certificate you can apply for jobs in the UK and overseas. Ask your trainer on the course for more information. Fast track your certificate and have it sent out the day after you pass the course! Choose this option in the online transaction process, or request it when booking over the phone with an advisor!
Can UK-TEFL find me a job after the course?
Yes, UK-TEFL prides itself on its fantastic Paid Teaching Placement Service. We offer EXCLUSIVE opportunities to our graduates including short term contracts in Italy and long term placements in Spain, South Korea and Brazil. We are currently recruiting for 40+ placements. The UK-TEFL Advanced Certificate Course also has placements which give preference to those who have passed the Advanced Course, for example in Japan and Saudi Arabia.
Is there any further training available?
Our Advanced TEFL Certificate Course is the next step onwards from your Standard Course, and allows you to develop your skills further. This 2 day classroom based course comprises of four modules in teaching business English, young learners, advanced learners and one-to-one to build on everything you have already learnt, giving you specialised and in-depth knowledge. You will also gain additional teaching practice and the skills and confidence to adapt your teaching to suit a variety of ages and types of classes. Click here to find out more about the Advanced Course.
What happens if I need to change my course date or location?
We do have very fair terms and conditions which we recommend looking at before applying for a course. If you need to change your date or location before the course there is a £20 charge up to two weeks before the course. After this date, the fee is £75. Please note that if you miss any day of your course for any reason and you wish to attend on an alternative date, you can do so for a fee of £50 per day.
Where can I get more information?
If you can't find what you are looking for then call one of our advisors on 0871 222 1231
I have seen other websites and companies listing similar dates and locations to UK-TEFL. Who actually runs the courses?
UK-TEFL is the organisation that runs the TEFL courses with its accredited trainers. We work with some other organisations and agencies that sell spaces on our courses. After attending a UK-TEFL course, regardless of who you bought the course from, you will receive certification from UK-TEFL.
What is the CELTA course?
CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. It has, traditionally, been the only route to gaining EFL employment in the UK or overseas. A CELTA course lasts four weeks full time, in a classroom. This is not to be confused with courses that have the majority of their training done online. A job asking for CELTA, or equivalent, will only accept those who have done a CELTA or a Trinity TESOL course.
I have seen online that you must complete 100 hours + of training to get a job? Is this true?
An employer is only interested in time spent in the classroom, therefore online and distance learning hours do not count as time spent in the classroom and will not enable you to gain employment. If a job is asking for 120 hours of training it will mean a CELTA or Trinity TESOL qualification. Untrustworthy TEFL organisations will try and claim that their courses are the equivalent of a CELTA course purely because they provide up to 120 hours of training but these courses are predominantly comprised of online study and should not be confused with a CELTA.
Is accommodation included?
Accommodation is not included in the price of the TEFL course, so you will need make your own arrangements if you need to stay overnight in the course location. A suggested hotel is listed at the bottom of every course location page, to see agreed rates that we have with venues, please click here.
Is UK-TEFL an accredited training provider?
Yes, UK-TEFL have been awarded Part B accreditation on the Investing in Quality licence which gives formal recognition to our in-house programmes. Students can opt in to be formally assessed on their course to receive an NCFE issued certificate of achievement. NCFE is a recognised awarding organisation and further information on our accreditation and the NCFE can be found here>

How old do I need to be to apply for the Advanced Course?
You must be aged sixteen or over to enrol on the Advanced Course.

Can my employer be invoiced directly for the Advanced Course?
Yes, all you need to do is call 0871 222 1231 to speak to an advisor. You will need to provide all of your details, and an invoice will be sent out to your employer.
How far ahead do I need to book for the Advanced Course?
You can book up until midnight the day before your course, but we would recommend that you book at least two weeks in advance to ensure you get a place.
What is the difference between the standard and advanced courses?
The standard course is your first step into TEFL, and is designed to give you a comprehensive knowledge of teaching EFL, incorporating topics such as grammar and phonetics.
The Advanced course is the next stage onwards, and is designed to build on the TEFL skills you will already have acquired, whilst equipping you with a more specialised and detailed knowledge, specifically related to the types of teaching scenarios you are likely to encounter. You will focus on business English, young learners, advanced learners and one-to-one and it is a great way to help you stand out to employers.

Your Advanced Certificate is a 20 hour qualification, which is internationally recognised and accredited by the NCFE.

As with the standard course, there is no final exam on the Advanced Course. You will be continually assessed throughout the course by your trainer, in relation to the way you handle the tasks you are given.
You can also opt in for the NCFE certificate on the Advanced Course. If you choose this, you will be formally assessed by your trainer in relation to set criteria and on passing, you will be awarded an NCFE-issued certificate of achievement. Find out more on our accreditation here>
Can you recommend any books for the Advanced Course?
Although not essential, we highly recommend our Lesson Plans Pack which is one of our most popular products for those taking the Advanced Course. The pack includes hard copies of Part 1 and Part 2, covering various topics and proficiency levels from young learners to business English plus handy worksheets for you to use. Find out more here>
Is it possible to study my TEFL course online?
Through our extensive experience in the TEFL industry, along with our worldwide recruitment contacts, we know that classroom-based qualifications are the only way that you will be able to secure EFL employment which is why we only offer these courses. In terms of finding work, online TEFL courses are worthless and are usually disregarded by employers. The skills required to teach EFL cannot be acquired througn online study, therefore we strongly advise you to attend a classroom course which will give you a widely recognised and accredited certificate and realistic employment opportunities.
What happens if I lose my certificate?
We strongly advise you to keep your UK-TEFL certificate safe, but if you do lose or misplace it we can always send you a new one.
If you have lost your NCFE issued certificate, you can request a replacement by calling 0871 222 1231. This is priced at £50, will state 'replacement' on it and will be sent out within 5-7 working days.
If you have lost your standard UK-TEFL issued certificate, you can request a replacement by calling 0871 222 1231. This is priced at £20 and will be sent out within 5-7 working days.
After the Standard Course, is there any further training that I can do?
The UK-TEFL Advanced Certificate Course is a great top up or refresher after completing the UK-TEFL Standard Course. The Advanced Course will Specialise in Teaching Business English, Teaching English to Young Learners, Teaching to Advanced Learners and One-to-One Teaching. This 2 day course is available nationwide and is priced at £200.
