Frequently Asked Questions
Is accommodation included in the cost of the course?

Accommodation is not included in the price of the TEFL course. You will need make your own arrangements if you need to stay overnight in the course location. At the foot of every course location page we list suggested hotels with agreed room rates if they are available. Please click here.

What is the minimum age to attend a course?

The  You must be aged sixteen or over to enrol on a UK-TEFL course.

Are any particular qualifications required to enrol on the courses?

You don’t need any qualifications to enrol on the standard course. As long as you can speak English fluently you can attend  – you don’t even need any teaching experience. For the advanced course you must hold a TEFL qualification, including weekend TEFL certificates, CELTA, Trinity TESOL and online TEFL qualifications.

Do I need to be good at grammar?

You don’t need to be proficient in English grammar as it will be covered during the course. Most people haven’t studied grammar since attending school so you won’t be alone. If you do want to refresh your knowledge, you can enrol on our accredited Online Grammar Course or alternatively, you may want to purchase the A-Z of English Grammar Book to refer to.

How do I pay?

You can pay with all major debit/credit cards, via PayPal or using a cheque/postal order. If your course is more than two weeks away you can pay a £50 deposit. If you paid by credit/debit card, the remaining balance will abe deducted automatically two weeks before the course start date. If you don't want this to happen, give us a call and we can arrange a way which suits you better. If your course is within the next two weeks you will need to pay the full amount.

If my employer is paying for the course can they be invoiced for the fees?

Yes, just call 0871 222 1231. One of our advisors will take all your details and your employer’s details. Your joining instructions will be issued and sent to you and we will send an invoice direct to your employer.

How far in advance do I need to book the course?

You can book enrol on a course until midnight the day before the course, however, we highly recommend you book on at least two weeks in advance.

What is the difference between the two day course and the three day standard course?

The main difference is the two day course is held at weekends and the three day course is held during the week. They cover the same content but the three day course has shorter days. If it is possible for you to attend a course during  the week, we would recommend you enrol on the three day course, as you will gain an extra lesson practice, more one-to-one time with your trainer and more hours of training on your certificate.

Do I need to get any books for the course?

Although not essential, we would highly recommend purchasing the TEFL Starter Pack if you are attending the standard course or our Lesson Plans Pack which is one of our most popular products for those taking the Advanced Course. The pack includes hard copies of Part 1 and Part 2, covering various topics and proficiency levels from young learners to business English plus handy worksheets for you to use.

How large are the classes?

Our classes have around 20 students but numbers may vary depending on the time of year so classes may be smaller.

Do I have to take an exam?

There isn't an exam as there is continuous assessment throughout the course. You will be formally assessed by your trainer in relation to specific criteria and on successful completion of the course, you will be issued with a certificate to certify that you have met the required learning objectives.

Can I fail the course?

You can fail but it is the trainers’ job to get you through the course. In our experience the only people who do fail are not really suited to becoming a teacher. Our fail rate is less than one percent.

You must achieve specific learning outcomes by the end of the course in order to pass the assessment. The assessment is designed to allow for progression on the course, so your final teaching practice will be the one that determines whether or not you pass.

Further information on the assessment can be found here>

What qualification will I get?

You will be qualified to teach English as a foreign language in the UK and overseas. You will be formally assessed on your course in order to receive a certificate. Your trainer will assess you during the course in relation to set criteria as follows:

  • Use of target language
  • Clear presentation
  • Positive learning atmosphere
  • Flow and use of high student talk time
  • Organisation of lesson
  • Clear board work, handouts and pictures

Find out more on our accreditation here>

When will I receive my certificate?

If you successfully complete the course your certificate will be sent by standard delivery post within 15 working days of the end of the course. It will be sent to the address given when booking so if your address changes you need to let UK-TEFL immediately by calling 0871 222 1231.

If you have purchased a fast track certificate, it will be sent within 5-7 days of the end of your course.

Can UK-TEFL find me a job after the course?

Yes, UK-TEFL prides itself on its fantastic Paid Teaching Placement Service. We offer EXCLUSIVE opportunities to our graduates including short term contracts in Italy and long term placements in Spain, South Korea and Brazil.  We are currently recruiting for 40+ placements. The UK-TEFL Advanced Certificate Course also has placements which give preference to those who have passed the Advanced Course, for example in Japan and Saudi Arabia.

You can apply of jobs as soon as you receive your certificate. Order a fast track certificate and will speed up the process.

What happens if I need to change my course date or location?

We do have very fair terms and conditions which we recommend looking at before applying for a course. If you need to change your date or location before the course there is a £20 charge up to two weeks before the course. After this date, the fee is £75. Please note that if you miss any day of your course for any reason and you wish to attend on an alternative date, you can do so for a fee of £50 per day.

I have seen online that you must complete 100 hours + of training to get a job? Is this true?

No. Reputable EFL employers only recruit teachers that have had first hand teaching experience, so you MUST attend classroom based training in order to become employed. Classroom based training includes teaching practise, something that cannot be achieved online.

What is the CELTA course?

CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. It has, traditionally, been the only route to gaining EFL employment in the UK or overseas. A CELTA course lasts four weeks full time, in a classroom. This is not to be confused with courses that have the majority of their training done online. A job asking for CELTA, or equivalent, will only accept those who have done a CELTA or a Trinity TESOL course.

Is UK-TEFL an accredited training provider?

Yes, UK-TEFL have been awarded NCFE accreditation under the Investing in Quality Licence which gives formal recognition to our in-house programmes as providing confirmation and assessment of a student's achievement of specific criteria at a certain level . NCFE is a recognised awarding organisation and further information on our accreditation and NCFE can be found here>

What is the difference between the standard and advanced courses?

The standard course is your first step into TEFL, and is designed to give you a comprehensive knowledge of teaching EFL, incorporating topics such as grammar and phonetics.

The Advanced course is the next stage onwards, and is designed to build on the TEFL skills you will already have acquired, whilst equipping you with a more specialised and detailed knowledge, specifically related to the types of teaching scenarios you are likely to encounter. You will focus on business English, young learners, advanced learners and one-to-one and it is a great way to help you stand out to employers.

Is it possible to study my TEFL course online?

Through our extensive experience in the TEFL industry, along with our worldwide recruitment contacts, we know that classroom-based qualifications are the only way that you will be able to secure EFL employment which is why we only offer these courses. In terms of finding work, online TEFL courses are worthless and are usually disregarded by employers. The skills required to teach EFL cannot be acquired througn online study, therefore we strongly advise you to attend a classroom course which will give you a widely recognised and accredited certificate and realistic employment opportunities.

What happens if I lose my certificate?

We strongly advise you to keep your UK-TEFL certificate safe, but if you do lose or misplace it you can order a replacement by calling 0871 222 1231.

Can I get help with funding?

If you receive Job Seekers Allowance, ask your advisor about receiving funding.

If you need help or advice with funding, click here.

What is the NCFE?

The trainer individually assesses you on learning outcomes such as: target language, organisation and high student talk time so your qualification is more personalised and will be more beneficial for recruiters as they can see your specific teaching abilities. Click here to find out more about NCFE.

How many jobs are available?

In the past year, 5000 teachers were needed by recruiters that UK-TEFL works with. We have up to 1000 worldwide recruitment contacts and over 100 voluntary, short and long term placements.
